Crown Mas
Creatives. Risk-takers. Carnival lovers. For Crown Mas, Toronto Carnival is all about freedom, unity and community. Founded by Calvin Hyman, Casey Pereira and Deon King, this trio is hard at work year-round crafting their section of the Toronto Revellers band for the highly anticipated, summertime celebration.
Determined to start a section in Toronto, it took Crown Mas a few years to find their place in the Carnival community. After taking a few trips to the life changing experience that is Trinidad Carnival, they were on a mission to make carnival a permanent staple in their lives. Driven by the history of emancipation and tradition learned from conversations with locals, and seasoned Mas veterans they created a section in hopes of uniting established masqueraders with people in and around the city that have never participated before. Most importantly, continuing to highlight the art and ingenuity behind producing Mas. When Crown Mas hits the road, they play as one. No matter who you are, it’s clear that each person around you is family.
Crown Mas tapped into the fitness community early on because they recognized Carnival as sport. Both Carnival and sports inspire confidence to come as you are, be bold, and feel empowered. The team’s visionary designs blend local-artisan traditions with the trailblazing style of the new generation of women dominating the athletic world. Like the innovators before them Crown Mas works to continue to bridge past, present, and future with costumes that inspire a new generation that they hope will keep Carnival going for generations to come.
While the Pandemic means there’s no parade this year, Crown Mas are showcasing their work off-site at Stackt Market and everyone’s invited. Toronto, this is for you.
